We were always hungry. After my stepdad lost his job at the smelter, we got really poor. He could not find much work around our little town, and we were reduced to going to his sister’s house a few miles away to eat every Sunday. Her husband, who was white, worked as a mechanic in Henrietta and they had a regular income.

My mother eventually talked about me and my sister going to Haskell Indian Institute…
